Chalkline / Features / Offline and sharing

Local first

Works without the internet. Shares without a server.

Chalkline keeps your boards on your device, and still lets you share them: the board travels inside the link itself, so nothing is uploaded anywhere.

No account · Works offline · Your drawings never leave this device

Open once, then it works anywhere

After the first visit your browser keeps the app, so it opens and saves on a plane or in a basement. Install it from the browser menu to open it like any other app.

  • Boards, versions and your library stay on this device
  • Install on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Android and iOS
  • Open .chalk files from your computer's file manager

Share a board as a link

The board is packed into the part of the address after the #, which browsers never send to a server. Whoever opens it gets their own copy.

  • Editable copy links
  • View only links with pan and zoom
  • QR codes to move a board to your phone
  • Embed code for blogs, Notion and course pages

Automatic backup

Pick a folder once, and every board is saved there as a file each hour. Point it at a Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox folder on your computer for cloud backup without an account here.

  • Only changed boards are written
  • Download every board as one .zip in any browser
  • Folders, tags and a 30 day trash keep things tidy

Questions

Good to know

The whole board is compressed into the link after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part to any server, so the board goes straight from your link to the other person's browser.

Anyone who has the link can open the board, so share it only with people you trust. Nothing is stored on a server, which also means a link cannot be switched off later: whoever already has it keeps their copy.

Yes, through the Google Drive folder on your computer: choose it as the backup folder in Chrome or Edge and Chalkline writes your boards there every hour.
